Monday 2-2 -2.36 Units

Here are tonights selections, let me know what you think.

5 Units West Virginia -4.5 -104

A year ago St. Louis man-handled the Mountaineers of West Virginia 75-45 as a 5-point favorite but Mr. Offense Marques Perry is gone, and the Mountaineers are at home this time. Against inferior competition, the Billikans are shooting 50% from the field and winning the battle of the boards. That all changes as they head to Morgantown. Drew Schifino averaged 20 ppg a year ago and should get even better while 6'-10" Kevin Pittsnogle looks to improve on the 12 ppg he averaged a year ago. In a big surprise Saturday W. Va. lost to Northeastern 91-84. Pittsnoble scored just 5-points and the rebounding battle was lost 39-31. We'll see if that was a a fluke; Revenge is the key here in a defensive duel.

5 Units Indiana U +13 -103

The Big 10 meets the ACC in this strong battle of defensive teams. Indiana (2-1) is led by a couple of talented sophomores in 6'-3" Bracey Wright (22 ppg, 7 rpg) and 6'-8" sophomore Sean Kline (10 ppg, 6 rpg). They can play great defense (39% shooting allowed) and are off a wild 80-77 OT win over Xavier. They held the Musketeers to 41% shooting. Indiana shot 48%, but stunk up the joint from the free throw line with a poor 19-31 (61%). Still, in Indiana's lone road game they lost 73-60 at Vanderbilt as a +3 dog. Wake Forest (3-0) has wins over Memphis, Elon and Yale, averaging 89 ppg. They won't get 89 against tough Indiana, but they do have a deeper, more balanced team with a strong backcourt (6'-2" sophomore Justin Gray and 6'-0" junior Taron Downey) and a hard working frontcourt of 6'-8" junior Vytas Danelius and 6'-8" Jamaal Levy (8 rpg). Three players are averaging 13 ppg for this unselfish team and Wake Forest was 18-2 SU in home games last year (7-8-1 ATS). Wake is holding opponents to 39% shooting and was 4-9 UNDER the total at home last season. This should be a strong defensive battle.

5 Units South Florida +12.5 -103

In a well rounded shooting game, South Florida topped Wright State 74-59 Saturday behind Jimmy Baxter's 22 points and Brian Swift adding 13. South Florida has a nice frontcourt, anchored by 6'-9" Terrance Leather. South Florida is 3-0 with an impressive win 64-62 at Valparaiso. They trailed 35-28 at the half, but didn't quit and got the big win. Leather and friends are outrebounding opponents by 17 rpg!!! The Providence Friars had a couple of little sister games before defeating Bama 76-71 as a 12 point fave over the weekend. Hofstra was victim #1 last Saturday, a 69-56 victory. Against Alabama, the Friars' 6'-8" Rob Saunders scored 22 points, 6'-7" Ryan Gomez hit for 17 points and 7 rebounds and Sheiku Kabba had 14 points. The Friars are showing great shooting and rebounding skills, plus they're taking care of the ball and winning turnover battles. They can't be taken lightly!!!

5 Units San Francisco +19 -103

Long road trip for San Fran!!! San Francisco has already played six games highlighted by a 76-65 win over Ohio State. The Dons haven't done very well on the road however, with a 1-3 SU & 1-2 ATS log. Also, John Cox, a 6'-5" guard who scored 15 ppg last year, is out until January so scoring could be a problem and the team is shooting 43% from the field. St. Joseph’s (2-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) has it all, led by stellar point guard Jameer Nelson and Delonte West, who comprise one of the best backcourts in the country. Nelson can score and pass and loves the up-tempo game. The Hawks also lean on 6-11 center Dwayne Jones to play defense and work the boards (5 rpg). They had an impressive 73-66 win over Gonzaga as a dog and have the home court here.

10 Units Maryland -3.5 -105

Last time out, Maryland cruised against lesser opponent Hofstra 87-72 for their third straight victory to start the season. Maryland also placed five players in double figures, including center, Jamar Smith, who had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Maryland now gets its toughest test of the young season as No. 15 Wisconsin comes to town to play in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Wisconsin (3-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) continues this year with its tenacious defense, only allowing 48 points to start the season. This should be interesting as Maryland is lighting it up early, averaging 82 points per game. Last time out, Wisconsin cruised against Rutgers 55-43 SU. However, Wisconsin has been ice cold from the floor to start the year, only maintaining a 38% FG percentage on offense. Clearly, the defense is covering up a few blemishes. Unless the Badgers improve the offense quickly, Maryland will simply outscore them on sheer talent and home court in a defensive duel!!

Good luck tonight my friends,
